The properties of synchrotron light mean that experimental results are typically more accurate, more specific and faster than results obtained from conventional laboratory equipment.
The synchrotron’s macromolecular and micro crystallography capabilities cater for high-throughput screening and small crystals. These are routinely used to determine high-resolution crystal structures of proteins and other biomolecules. Combining crystallography with small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) provides valuable insights into the behaviour and structure of large biological molecules in solution.
Synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy with live-cell capabilities substantially extends the scope of laboratory-based infrared techniques.
X-ray fluorescence microscopy provides elemental, structural and chemical information for applications that include drug design and sub-cellular imaging.
When our upgraded imaging and medical beamline is completed in late 2012, it will offer high-resolution, phase-contrast x-ray imaging and CT of biomedical samples and small animals, and enable research into new cancer treatments. Support facilities include biomedical laboratories, surgeries and preparation areas.
